FIU's College of Business Administration offers through the Institute of Management Sciences (a subsidiary of UCC), the Master of Science in Human Resource Management , that is designed for students who have completed an undergraduate degree in HR or an equivalent from a regionally accredited college or university.

Faculty

Instructions will be provided by full time faculty from the campus in Miami, Florida. Local lecturers or tutors will be utilized where appropriate.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must comply with the following admission conditions:

  • Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Earned an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher in all upper division course work.
  • Have a minimum of 5 years experience, including at least 2 years in the field of HR.
  • Obtain two letters of recommendation from either faculty members at institution attended for your undergraduate degree, professional supervisors/managers or business associates.
  • Complete a personal interview and submit a two page essay on their motivation to attend the programme.
If an applicant fails to meet any of the above requirements, the applicant is encouraged to submit additional documentation to augment their application portfolio. The Admissions Committee will consider, for example, a masters degree in another discipline, a law or medical degree, the results of GMAT or GRE tests, a professional certification such as CPA, CFA, SHRM etc., or additional specialised leadership experience or training in reaching their recommendation.

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • A two page essay
  • An up-to-date resume

    Wellness Management

    This course focuses on managing employee safety and security, on mental, attitudinal and health related outcomes. It also discusses managing absenteeism, turnover, and counterproductive behavior. The course covers attitude surveys, OSHA and security and safety audits.

    MAN 6317

    Critical Thinking in Human Resource Management

    This course focuses on developing critical thinking skills to solve complex and multidimensional human resource management problems. The course emphasizes the analysis and discussion of real cases and scenarios. These cases include human resource disputes on the verge of going to court as well as mock trials based on real human resource disputes. Students will be presented with opportunities to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the different courses to problems that have human, legal, and business dimensions. Students also practice writing data-based executive summaries and executing data-based board presentations. Through the use of role play and simulations, students will have opportunities to both deliver and take constructive criticism.

    Employment Law and Human Resource Management

    This course focuses on the legal and regulatory factors surrounding human resource management. The emphasis is on creating awareness of legal risks and legal constraints when making HR business decisions. Case studies are used to illustrate and discuss legal implications. Numerical analysis of the workforce to assess adverse impact also are discussed.

    MAN 6327

    High Involvement Human Resource Management

    This course focuses on human resource practices that motivate and empower employees to excel on the job by fostering their participation and involvement in organizational decision-making. Motivational and leadership theories discussing participatory decision-making, self-managed teams, total quality management, and other issues are reviewed. Students learn how to conduct high-involvement audits and benchmarking studies so that they can successfully implement such systems in their organizations.

    MAN 6626

    International Human Resource Management

    For the global organization, success and indeed survival depend on how well it manages its work force. A global work force includes the home country, the host country and often, third country nationals in a variety of employment settings. Decisions about how to recruit, train, compensate, and generally manage these employees are discussed. Cross-cultural differences in values are examined. Emphasis is placed on managing the international assignee. Students will be given opportunities to specialize in a particular nation by conducting individual or groups projects.

    Labour Issues and Conflict Management

    This course offers students techniques and skills to enhance their management of conflicts and disputes. It is designed to teach students methods to manage interpersonal disputes between/among parties "productively." It emphasizes building partnerships and long-term positive relationships in the business world. Students will investigate the theoretical and practical aspects of power, personality traits, conflict assessment, communication, and political disputes and problem-solving in developing appropriate strategies, tactics, and goals in conflict resolution.

    Human Resource Knowledge Management

    This course focuses on the management and development of the organization's human capital. The course will cover topics such as the identification of learning needs in line with corporate strategy, current and future performance problems, and individual development of a culture; learning principles, web-based technology and post-training techniques that can maximize the return on investment through transfer of training; and the evaluation of training programs through quantitative (e.g. field research) and qualitative methods (e.g. scorecards). Students learn how to design challenging yet attainable and measurable instructional objectives

    MAN 6316

    Human Resource Management Metrics

    This course focuses on the linkage between human resources and the organization's financial plan. The processes of analyzing, benchmarking, controlling, and measuring the effectiveness of human resource programs are discussed. The application of research design and measurement theory to develop meaningful HRM metrics is emphasized. Students learn how to report findings in a practical and influential manner. They also learn how to use statistical software to analyze their data and draw meaning conclusions.

    MAN 6385

    Human Resource Strategy and Planning

    This course discusses the notion of strategic planning in the context of human resource management. Different strategies (e.g., cost, differentiation) are reviewed along with their implications for human resource management. Basic notions of strategic management such as the development of mission statements, the identification of the organization's competitive advantage and core competencies, and the development of corporate and business strategies are covered. In addition, the tools that facilitate strategic human resource management such as HR inventories, knowledge management, and the alignment of the organizational culture and the organization's strategy are reviewed. This course will include case studies used to diagnose strategy.

    MAN 6347

    Performance & Talent Management

    This course focuses on the development and implementation of effective performance management systems. Design issues such as criterion contamination and rating formats will be covered so that students learn how to design valid performance measurement systems. The development of multi-source and electronic performance monitoring is covered. The process of diagnosing performance problems is discussed. Implementation issues such as facilitating effective performance feedback interviews, coaching employees, handling poor performance and trouble employees, and documenting performance problems are reviewed. A "systems thinking" model of succession planning and leadership development in today's volatile workplace is discussed.

    Rewards Systems Management

    This course covers all aspects of compensation and reward systems such as the strategic alignment of compensation and other HR systems, job evaluation, merit- and skill-based pay, cost-effective benefit programs, and the increasingly flexible compensation systems demanded by today's dynamic and diverse work force

    MAN 6365

    Staffing Organizations

    This course focuses on the identification, recruitment, selection, and promotion of successful employees. The development of systems that comply with regulatory issues such as equal employment opportunity and affirmative action laws while satisfying business goals is covered. Measurement issues are discussed in the context of their relevance to not only legal issues but also to the validity of the measures. The pros and cons of various recruitment approaches and selection techniques also are discussed. Case studies illustrating legal issues in selection are evaluated. The use of emerging technologies in selection and assessment is covered as well.

PROGRAMME SCHEDULE

  • Duration: 14 months  
  • Days: Saturdays and Sundays online sessions
  • Online Component- 2 hours. The total contact hours including online component is 36 hours.
  • Time: Saturdays 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Sundays 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Textbooks

University College of the Caribbean (UCC) and Florida International University (FIU) will provide all prescribed text books.

Tuition Fees

The overall cost Duration: 14 months is $15,000.00 USD. Fees are subject to change at short notice. A deposit of $1,000.00USD required upon formal acceptance to the programme. Tuition and fees are due prior to the beginning of each module. Tuition and fees cover access to FIU online library and coffee break and lunch are provided on class days. The fees also includes a one-year membership to the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM).  

Student Loans

Applicants may apply for an international student's loan through the International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC) in the USA. No collateral or security is required, but interested applicants will need to identify a US co-signer to guarantee the loan. Application forms and brochures are available at UCC offices.
