20 Months Degree Course

Florida International University (FIU), offers through the Institute of Management Sciences, an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) programmme in Jamaica. The EMBA programme is an existing degree at the FIU's Chapman School of Business.

The EMBA programme in Jamaica consists of two programme cohorts. The duration of the EMBA programme is 20 months. Tenured FIU business faculty teach in the Programme.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants are considered for admission on the basis of individual applications and interviews.


Applicants must comply with the following admission conditions:

  • Have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Earned an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher in all upper division course work.
  • Have at least 5 or more years of managerial experience.
  • Obtain two letters of recommendation from either faculty members at institution attended for your undergraduate degree, professional supervisors/managers or business associates.
  • Complete a personal interview and submit a two page essay on their motivation to attend the programme.
If an applicant fails to meet any of the above requirements, the applicant is encouraged to submit additional documentation to augment their application portfolio. The Admissions Committee will consider, for example, a masters degree in another discipline, a law or medical degree, the results of GMAT or GRE tests, a professional certification such as CPA, CFA etc., or additional specialised leadership experience or training in reaching their recommendation.

In selecting participants, the Admissions Committee considers the following:
  • Demonstrated managerial experience and effectiveness.
  • Potential for significant growth.
  • Ability to do graduate work in business.
  • Ability to contribute to the study team and to class participation.
  • Maturity and motivation.
  • Ability and willingness to make an 20 month commitment.

Individuals interested in applying for admission to the programme should submit the following:

  • A FIU Application for Graduate Degree Programme. The application is to be completed online. It is important to advise the Co-ordinator of the submission date and reference # once you have completed the application online. See instructions attached.
  • An Official transcript(s) from every college/university attended
  • An up-to-date Resume
  • Two Letters of recommendation
  • A two page essay
  • Non-refundable US $30.00 application fee.

Review of the relevant quantitative techniques required for business analysis and decision making, including decision models, mathematical programming, statistics and forecasting. This is a WebCt and Excel based course.

Operations Management

This course covers analysis, design, and operations organizational systems.  The system approach is used to provide a framework or general model of analysis, to which specific concepts, quantitative techniques, and tools can be related. The material presented has application to any organization of people and machines, including hospitals, government agencies, services organizations, and industrial concerns.

Organizational Behavior

Individual, interpersonal, and small group behavior in complex organizations. Focus on behavior, its causes, and management interventions to improve organizational effectiveness. Research methods to study organizational behavior.

Accounting for Managers

Presentation of the nature, techniques and uses if accounting from the perspective of people who manage business and investments in business. Covers both financial and management accounting.

Global Financial Strategy, Aspects of strategic financial environment and management of firms that operate in a global arena; to include recent developments in financial strategy, international trade and economic decision making.

International Business Law

Studies the importance of law and legal institutions on commerce workings of administrative law, various aspects of employment legislation and other areas of legal environment of business.

Marketing Management in Global Economy

Analysis and application of theory and problem solving for marketing management in the global environment. Emphasis will be on the role of marketing in the organization, planning the marketing effort, management of marketing effort, management of marketing organizations, control of marketing operations, and evaluations of the marketing contributions.

Financial Management in Global Economy

In-depth examination of asset, liability and capital structure management, with emphasis on valuation capital budgeting techniques; risk evaluation, working capital environment; and methods of short-term, intermediate and long-term financing.

This course explores the process of managing innovation. In today's global market-place, competition from all over the world forces firms to continuously upgrade their product offerings and ways of doing business. This course discusses how to be more creative, how to manage creatively, and how to improve innovation.

Comprehensive treatment of analysis of financial statements as aid for decision making; looks at current state of financial reporting practices and impact of published statements on economic systems.

Strategic Management

The use of cases, guest lectures, and gaming to integrate the analysis and measurement tools, the functional areas and public policy issues. The objective is to develop skill in broad area of rational decision-making in an administrative context of uncertainty.

This course examines the environment variables affecting international operations, trade and investment theories, international institutions, and regional economic groups.  It also focuses on international finance, international accounting, international marketing, and international management problems and issues.

MAR 6816

Corporate Simulation

Course emphasis on application and integration of concepts tools, through participation in the marketing management of a firm in competition with other firms. The course's focal point is computerized marketing management simulation.

Tuition/Fees:
US$19,500. A US $1,000.00 non-refundable deposit is required upon acceptance to the Programme. Payment of the balance is required in installments at (on average) five-week intervals. (Participants will receive upon acceptance into the Programme, the Approved Payment Schedule). Participants who leave the Programme receive no refund.

International EMBA Fees cover:

  • Tuition.

  • All required text books and supplies.

  • Web Based (WEBCT) handouts - lecture summary.

  • Coffee Break and Lunch on class days.

  • Access to on-line libraries.

  • Wireless Connection in classroom.

  • A five day mandatory field trip to Miami (hotel, airfare and transportation).

PROGRAMME SCHEDULE

  • Duration : 20 months.

  • Days: 1 Day on alternate Fridays and Sundays

  • Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Student Loans
Applicants may apply for an international student’s loan through the International Education Finance Corporation (IEFC) in the USA or Canada. No collateral or security is required, but interested applicants will need to identify a US or Canadian co-signer to guarantee the loan. Application forms and brochures are available at IMS and IMP offices.

Transfer of Credit

Students may transfer no more than 6 hours for their Master’s Degree programme. All transfer credits must be approved.
