2 Year Degree Course
Technology continues to change the way we do business and carry out daily activities. No doubt, there is huge potential for those with knowledge of emerging technologies to contribute creative approaches which will make a real difference in transforming our economy and community.
The BSc. Information Technology is a degree programme from the University College of the Caribbean (UCC) which will provide participants with an understanding of how information technology works and how it can be applied to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of an organisation.
The BSc. Information Technology course aims to develop graduates who have a broad range of skills in the IT areas, and who can apply IT successfully to organisations.
The degree has been designed for those
wanting to work in a wide variety of
'technical' positions as designers,
programmers, technical directors,
etc. The Upper Level of the B.Sc. in
Information Technology builds on the
solid foundation provided by the ASc.
In MIS. It produces IT professionals
who are capable of applying their
broad knowledge of information
technologies and business issues to
the design of integrated systems
including networks, databases and
websites in order to solve
organizational challenges. Graduates
of the programme are ready for
employment as IT Managers, Project
Managers, Database Administrators,
Network Security Specialists, or
Systems Analysts. Students will also be expected to undertake an IT-related project in their final year.
Graduates of this programme will be able to assume responsibilities in virtually every sector of industry and commerce. Furthermore, graduates will be able to become fully-qualified practitioners in the IT field.
Target Group
This degree programme is specially designed for persons:
- Who are currently in IT positions or who aspire to work in IT positions and want to upgrade their skills and competencies.
- Who have recently left high school and who wish to pursue a career in the field.
- Who intend to pursue further studies in the area.
Programme Description
The programme consists of two components:
1) A lower level general business component. On completion of this component the student will be awarded the Associate of Science Degree in Management Information Systems.
2) An upper level component of specialised study in Information Technology. On completion of this component the student will be awarded the B.Sc. in Information Technology.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- As a lower division student, students must complete requirements for an associate degree, that is, applicants must possess a minimum of 5 CXC (General) or GCE O'level passes including English Language and Mathematics or Accounts or
- IMS' or IMP's Diploma in Computing or its equivalent from a registered tertiary institution or
- Have at least five (5) years' work experience and have in the opinion of the Institute the capability to do the standard of work required for the programme. These candidates may be required to perform at a satisfactory level on a prescribed aptitude test and/or a selection interview
- As an upper division student, you may enter if you have an Associate Degree in Management Information Systems or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.

Duration of Study
Candidates entering the programme in the first year (i.e. with the intention to complete both the Lower and Upper Divisions):
Full-time (day classes) 3 - 3 ½ years
Part-time (evenings or Sundays) 4 - 4 ½ years.
Candidates entering the programme in the third year (i.e. Upper Division only):
Full-time (day) 18-24 months
Part-time (evenings or Sundays) 2 - 2 ½ years.
Student Loans
Applicants may apply for an international
student’s loan through the International
Educational Finance Corporation (IEFC)
in the USA or Canada. No collateral
or security is required, but interested
applicants will need to identify a
US or Canadian co-signer to guarantee
the loan. Application forms and brochures
are available at IMS and IMP offices.
ACCREDITATION
IUCC is a tertiary institute registered
by the University Council of Jamaica,
the official local accrediting body
for tertiary education.
