Distance Education & Global Learning (DEGL) is the newest
offering of the University College of the Caribbean.
DEGL is based on a model that incorporates the use of modern
technologies including Internet Video streaming, Cable TV and
other technological modalities to deliver quality tertiary
education across Jamaica and the Caribbean. In its simplest
form, distance learning is the concept of a student and
instructor, separated by time and distance, using technology to
complete the instruction. The formal origins of distance
learning can be traced back to the early 1800's. Since then,
distance learning has evolved by embracing new technological
developments – radio, television, satellite, and today, the
Internet and Cable TV - to deliver educational opportunities to
learners whenever and wherever they are.

DEGL is specifically designed to address the challenge of making
tertiary education opportunities accessible and affordable
to all Jamaican students especially in the most under-served
areas of rural Jamaica.
During the pilot phase of the project, two degree programmes
will be offered, namely, the Associate and Bachelor of Science
degrees in Business Administration. Students will have the
opportunity to either enroll for the full degree programme or
for individual modules and/or any combination of modules.
Degrees will be granted by the University College of the
Caribbean (UCC, and will be subject to the institution's
established matriculation standards and other regulations.
