Profit From the UCC Advantage
The University College of the Caribbean knows the strategic importance
that customized programmes can have for
its clients. It's highest priorities are
to better understand it's business, roles,
and functions as public entities, and to translate
those functions and objectives into clear
learning and action outcomes while build
learning opportunities and experiences
that meet those outcomes.
See what
our past students are saying about UCC.
We could write pages
and pages about the quality and value
of a UCC education but you would probably
rather hear what our students think.
Jasmine
had a goal in mind when she enrolled in
and began her academic journey with the
IMS Associate Degree in Business
Administration. Then a Junior Supervisor
at a leading financial institution, Jasmine
has always dreamt of becoming a regional
banking executive. She moved further on
to her goal when she enrolled for her
Bachelor’s degree. That completed,
the young, ambitious banker has now completed
(2003) the Executive MBA degree with the
Florida International University (FIU),
sponsored by the Institute of Management
Sciences in Jamaica.
Jasmine says of IMS, “This is a
dynamic, nationally respected institution
of higher learning, fulfilling the needs
of many throughout our island. IMS inspires
excellence in its students, an ingredient
which will assist persons to move ahead
in the corporate world.”

The next time you swipe your debit card,
use a flex card, or cast a television
poll, think Ewart Henry. Ewart, now
a student of the University of North
Florida’s Bachelor in Business
Administration after having successfully
completed the IMS (UCC) Associate Degree in
Business, wants to become a leader in
management control systems. The IMS (UCC)
Top Student of the Year for 2000, speaks
admiringly of the Institute, “The
variety and intensity of the classes
offered by IMS have gone a long way
in preparing me to deal with the daily
challenges that come with the diversity
of my job.”

One of the most difficult things to
do is condition one-self to re-enter
the formal education system after a
long break. For Sadie Vaughan, the decision
to pursue an Associate of Science Degree
in Business Administration was indeed
a tough one. She submitted her application
to the Institute and there in 1995 began
her road to further training. She states,
“I was extremely impressed with
the level of support and encouragement
I received from IMS. The excellent tuition
and the relevance of the subject areas
covered, spurred me to continue my career
path until I achieved an Executive Masters
Degree in Business Administration.”
Sadie too has a dream: someday when
she owns her business she would like
to bring life to many of the theories
she has learnt

To
Derek Dodd, enrollment in the IMS
Associate Degree in Business Administration
in 1993 laid a secure foundation for
his rapid rise in his educational experience
and business career. He was one of the
very first students who, based on the
credits attained in the Associate Degree
programme, went on to enroll in and
complete the Executive MBA offered through
Barry University. Having started out
as a sales representative at Desnoes
& Geddes in 1992, then to Sales
Manager at Lascelles, Derek is now a
General Manager at the Jamaica Lottery
Company and has his ambitions set on
continuing the climb on the corporate
ladder.

"I received a world-class business
education from FIU. I believe there
is a well-qualified faculty in place
to provide a first-rate MBA program.
"The courses were grounded in the
real world and enabled me to develop
skills that have proved indispensable
in my work to date. I was looking for
an MBA program to fit my schedule and
provide ideas that could help me in
my job. The Florida International University
EMBA program met both needs. The EMBA
program provided practical information
that could be immediately applied to
everyday issues within an organization
and an up-to-date study of business
theory of which I can base future decisions.
From the exchange between the professors
and students, and the interpersonal
skill development I gained through participation
in group projects, the program provided
me with a complete education that has
already helped me to competently analyze
and resolve current business challenge".

“The 18 months I spent in the
FIU EMBA programme were challenging
as well as rewarding. Experienced professionals
inspired us to work hard individually
and collectively where team effort was
required. The tools at my disposal inclusive
of a laptop, access to vast amounts
of current and relevant information
through FIU’s web-based facilities,
prescribed books and handouts, provided
me with the practical information to
critically analyse the factors that
make organisations and countries prosper.
The skills gained in the FIU EMBA programme
have helped me become a better manager
today. Not only now I do have a greater
appreciation of the decision making
processes that bring success to organisations,
but also I have found it easier to focus
on the positive attributes of the individuals
with whom I associate to our mutual
benefit.
I consider my decision to enter the
FIU Executive MBA programme (in 2001)
the best professional or academic decision
I have ever made.”

As a Human Resource Practitioner I have
learnt that success in this field goes
beyond having a thorough understanding
of the functional HR activities. Equally
critical is having a sound knowledge
of the commercial activities of the
business. This will allow you to speak
the language of the business and importantly
to command your place at the table.
Against this background I decided to
pursue a MBA degree. The next step was
then to decide which institution I should
entrust this momentous responsibility
to. My personal search led me to select
FIU, which also came highly recommended
by friends and colleagues. I have found
the quality of the professors to be
extremely high and the materials covered
to be quite relevant and current. I
strongly believe that I made the right
choice in selecting FIU.
