The University College Concept
IMS/IMP created history in Jamaica when it outlined its plans for the first University College of the Caribbean.
Simultaneously it unveiled its logo for what
has now become reality, the University
College of the Caribbean.
A university college can be defined as an institution that amalgamates many of the functions of a university and a college.
Effectively a hybrid of some of the functions of a university and a traditional college. It
is a comprehensive institution that offers a
wide range of programme offerings from certificates through
Associate and Bachelor degrees and
Masters degrees with its main focus being at the baccalaureate degree or
certificate level in the applied areas.
Early Beginnings
IMS began operations in January 1992 as a
private higher education institution in Jamaica.
Between 1993 and 1997, the Institute developed
and offered a two-year Associate of Science Degree
programme in Business Administration at five (5)
regional training centres. The programme was supported
and initially developed in conjunction with Dalhousie
University, in Canada. To date, several batches of
students have graduated from these centres and have since
moved on to baccalaureate and graduate degree programmes
offered by UCC and other local and overseas institutions including
the University of the West Indies, University of Technology,
Nova Southeastern, Barry University, and Northern Caribbean
University.

Programme Expansion
Offerings have grown to fifteen professional diploma
and certificate programmes, six Associate of
Science degree programmes seventeen
indigenous and two overseas Bachelor of
Science and Arts programmes.
At the Masters level UCC offers 7
Master of Science degrees in conjunction
with the Florida International
University and the University of London.
The UCC also offers a wide range of
professional and executive development
programmes designed to serve and meet the
training needs of the entire spectrum of both public
and private sector organisations throughout Jamaica.
To date, UCC has graduated over 60,000
candidates at the certificate, diploma and associate
degree levels. In addition, for the current
academic year, there are approximately
one thousand prospective graduates at
all levels.
UCC
holds membership in a number
of prestigious local and international
umbrella organisations, namely, the Joint
Committee on Tertiary Education, the American
Council on Education, the Association
of Caribbean Tertiary Institutions, The
Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, the Private
Sector Organisation of Jamaica, the Jamaica
Computer Society and the Jamaica Association
of Training and Development.
Increasing Access Through Local
and International Collaboration
UCC’s most successful
host programme to date, the FIU EMBA,
began in 1999 with a cohort of 77 students
recruited from corporate Jamaica, and
added another large cohort within a year
and a third in September 2001.
UCC has also responded to the expressed
need of small and large corporations for
shorter, in-house executive-type training
programmes. In 1999 – 2000, the
then IMS
formed alliances with University of Florida,
Howard University and Penn State University
to offer a series of three-day executive
training courses to corporate Jamaica
including COURTS (Jamaica Ltd.), The Gleaner
Company, The Jamaica Observer and HOT
102.
• In today’s changing
world, UCC is committed to deliver quality
higher education programmes in collaboration
with other local and overseas higher education
institutions with the goal of widening
access to advanced education
IMP Acquisition
In October of 2002, IMS purchased the Institute of Management & Production (IMP). The Institute of Management and Production (IMP) was established in 1976 as the training institute of the ICD Group of Companies. In 1978, IMP expanded its role by offering educational and professional services (consulting, research and marketing) to the business community in Jamaica and the Caribbean. The merger of IMS and IMP formed one of the largest privately held tertiary education, consortiums in Jamaica. With combined resources and experience, the institution, renamed IMS/IMP
(and later UCC), was better able to provide a wider array of higher quality programmes, aiming to suite the needs of
students and clients alike with a total of over thirty-five (35) years of combined experience in the business of training.
