UCC Foundation
Description of scholarships, micro loans and work-study programs are found on this page. Scholarships are open to students in any field of study offered by the University College of The Caribbean LOCAL programs only. All available scholarships have criteria for recipient applicants. Criteria is restricted as defined below. Receipt of any award listed in this section is subject to the availability of funds.

 

Application Forms
All interested students must have received an acceptance letter from the UCC Registrar Office before an application for scholarship can be submitted. Scholarship applications should be submitted directly to the UCC Foundation at 6 Belmont Road, Kgn 5. Application Forms are available at 6 Belmont Road, Kgn 5 or 17 Worthington Avenue, Kgn 5, or at any of our outreach centers.

Continuing UCC students who wish to be considered for scholarships listed in this section must have a copy of their most recent transcript to accompany the application form. Aplicants must disclose current income sources.

 

Deadlines and Notification
For all types of financial assistance, priority consideration will be given to applicants whose financial data have been received and who have been admitted to UCC by June 30. LATE Applications will be accepted and considered for the second round of awards offered in January of each year. Scholarships offered in January are very limited, so every effort should be made to submit applications in a timely manner.


Applicants and parents of applicants are encouraged to estimate their previous year's income data, if necessary. Applicants who file on time will be notified of award prior to the beginning of Fall registration. Applications filed after June 30 will automatically be assigned for consideration for January awards. Awards will NOT be retroactive to September.

 

Students' Expected Earnings
All students who apply for financial assistance are expected to work and save a major portion of their earnings to apply against the coming year's academic expenses, or to secure adequate financing on their own.

 

Refund Policy
If a student receiving financial aid withdraws from UCC during their enrollment period, repayment of a micro loan will begin six months after termination. All scholarships will become null and void. Deferments may be granted under special circumstances.

 

Satisfactory Academic Progress
All Students receiving financial assistance are expected to establish and maintain satisfactory academic performance. For continued eligibility students must meet all of the following: A minimum cumulative GPA (Undergraduates) of 3.0; each student must complete 85% of all credit hours attempted and must meet graduation requirements in no more than the average length of their program.


Students may submit a written appeal to the Office of The Dean of Academic Affairs for reinstatement of their aid if exceptional conditions exist that prevent them from meeting the requirements.

 

Requirement for Proof of High School Graduation
Students must provide proof of high school graduation before aid may be disbursed, even though this may not be a requirement for admission. Proof should be attached to the application form.

First Generation

Applicants must be a first generation family member to seek higher education, demonstrate financial need and high academic performance. Applicant should provide a written essay of the importance of attaining higher education and the difference it will make in their life.

Applicant must be a member of Andrew’s Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church. Applicant may be a new, re-entry, or a continuing student. Recipient will be assessed according to financial need and previous academic history. Award is for local programs tuition only.

The Geraldine Adams’ Hope
Priority will be given to an applicant who is or has been a resident of a Girls’ home in any of the parishes that UCC has a campus center; be a high school graduate meeting normal matriculation requirements for any diploma, and must have recommendation letters from the Home, as well as, her high school. Applicant must provide a written essay describing her purpose for continuing education and plans for future development.
If no such candidate applies, young women facing extreme circumstances would be considered.

A rural applicant whose education has been interrupted and who finds it necessary to resume studies due to the changing demands in their lives. Applicant must demonstrate a financial need for assistance with their educational expenses to improve their marketable skills. Preference will given to heads of household and proven academic achievers.

Inner-City Youth Opportunity
Applicant must be enrolled in the Youth Leadership Training Program hosted by the Jamaican Chamber of Commerce Inner-City Development Committee; top male and female performers in the program, demonstrate strong leadership skills and community involvement. Preference will be given to candidates under the age of 21 years. Recipients are chosen based on grades and interview scores.

This scholarship is offered in memory of former Dean of Local Programmes, Janet Davis Lindsay. This award is open to any applicant who is currently enrolled in a UCC local program, and who, through no fault of their own, find themselves unable to complete payment of their degree program. This award is meant to be the helping hand to carry the student forward during a brief, but challenging time. Applicant must be in good academic standing and able to provide proof of hardship.

OAS/UCC BILATERAL (SCHOLARSHIP) AGREEMENT

 

The General Secretariat of the Organization of the American States (GS/OAS) and the University College of the Caribbean (UCC) have entered into a bilateral agreement with the aim of co-sponsoring eligible OAS scholarship recipients from other Caribbean islands or OAS member states other than Jamaica, for studies at the University College of the Caribbean. This agreement has been entered into as a result of its selection by past OAS scholarship recipients as a preferred place of study.
 

OAS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC STUDIES

 

Students that are nationals or permanent residents of a member state of the Organization of American States (OAS) (visit: http://www.oas.org/documents/eng/memberstates.asp for the list of OAS member states) and wish to pursue an academic degree at the University College of the Caribbean can apply for an OAS Academic Scholarship. Undergraduate Scholarships are offered only to candidates from the English-speaking Caribbean member states, for the last two years of study for an undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent). To apply for this classification of scholarship, the student must already be accepted into the university where he/she plans to study for the last two years of the undergraduate degree. OAS Scholarships are offered for onsite or online Programs.

OAS Scholarships will be awarded for an initial period of one academic year and may be renewed subsequently for up to one additional year if funds remain available and if the renewal is necessary to complete the program of study or research for which the scholarship was initially awarded.

The total financial award (tuition and benefits) from the OAS may not exceed US$30,000.00 per academic year which includes tuition, benefits, and administrative costs.

Benefits & Funding

 

OAS scholarships can only be granted for a maximum of two years.

 

The University College will review the progress of each Scholarship recipient after each year in the program and advise its partner organisation on the suitability of the scholarship recipient for continuing the program.

 

The scholarship recipients shall be subject to the general University College policies, regulations, and practices applicable to students, and visiting faculty, as the case may be as well as to those policies, regulations of the corresponding academic department.
