About The Commonwealth of
Learning
The Commonwealth of Learning
(COL) was inspired by the vision that the
peoples of the Commonwealth must and can have
access to knowledge, regardless of where they
live and whether they are rich or poor. It was
created by the Commonwealth Heads of Government
in late 1987 and became operational in early
1989. The Commonwealth of Learning is an
intergovernmental organization, with
headquarters in Vancouver, Canada, and has a
mandate to widen opportunities for learning in
the Commonwealth member states by promoting the
development and sharing of educational resources
and communications technologies. Working with
and providing services to hundreds of
institutions throughout the Commonwealth, COL is
helping to increase the capacities of developing
nations to meet the demands for improved access
to quality higher education.
Programme Aims and
Objectives
The Commonwealth Executive
MBA/MPA (CEMBA / CEMPA) Programmes complement
existing MBA/MPA programmes offered in the
Commonwealth — to meet the demand for
post-graduate management and public
administration education.
The CEMBA / MPA objectives
are:
• To enable students in the Commonwealth
countries where the programmes are offered to
obtain Masters degrees in the areas of Business
Administration and Public Administration,
contributing to their professional growth and
career advancement and to their country
development
• To develop human resources in various aspects
of the areas noted above
• To develop quality post-graduate programmes
that can be implemented widely in the
Commonwealth countries and can be
internationally recognized.
About the CEMBA / CEMPA
Programmes
Traditionally, the delivery
of MBA and MPA programmes has been expensive and
restrictive. However, COL sees these kinds of
partnerships with universities around the world
as a flexible, cost effective and viable mode of
delivery which overcomes time constraints and
geographical barriers, thereby offering
professionals a novel way of studying and
pursuing knowledge. Students are given a chance
to seek education at an affordable cost —
enriching themselves and their communities;
advancing in their own time and space, and at
their own pace.
The features of these
graduate degree programmes include:
• Cost effective and cost efficient educational
operations
• Provision of equal opportunity of admission
• Self instructional learning materials, in
print and non-print media (where relevant)
• Provision of face-to-face/classroom lecture
sessions
• Continuous and terminal evaluation.
• Programmes currently being offered by a
consortium of reputable universities in several
of the 52 nations of the commonwealth.
• Courses designed and developed by Canada’s top
universities including York University,
University of Toronto and University of Windsor.
• Programmes to be taught by a cadre of highly
respected and renowned local and international
faculty.
